Assignment 4: Show Me (Part 3: Designs)

I decided that I would work on two concepts for the final Show Me designs – a minimalist approach, and a Pop Art style.

Minimalist

I started with the Minimalist version and initially sketched out an alphabet to explore the minimum strokes that are needed to allow a letter to be legible. Fortunately, the word ‘type’ has capital letter forms that seem to lend themselves to this style – I’m not sure some of the rest work as well!

I then did a number of sketches of both the word ‘type’ and the possible layout.

I wanted to keep the cover sparse with a minimum of information. It features the title, symbols for the 3 sections and a bar code. I decided I would limit my palette to black, white and red, and I would use sanserif typefaces. I did a search for some minimal typefaces and looked at my existing collection. I then chose to use three typefaces – Infinity, Source Sans Pro, and Futura PT.

After looking at my sketches, and asking for some feedback from my family, I decided I preferred the version with the word ‘type’ descending across the page. Using InDesign I created the cover and began laying out the pages. This proved quite challenging in terms of how to provide the information and keep a simple layout with lots of white space. As a result I have gone with two double pages to keep the design consistent. I also elected to use a square format because it worked well with the cover typeface. I created three versions:

Version 1: I used a basic grid to set out the information, and added red to draw out particular elements and create breaks in the layout. Having initially tried the last page arranged vertically, I couldn’t get it to looked balanced so I moved to horizontal rows instead. I used Infinity for the large question mark because it echoed the cover typeface. I also created the visuals for the last page. I found several possible cats but decided on an outline version as it worked better with the rest of the format. I then adapted it in Illustrator to create more of a question mark tail.

Version 2: based on the first version but I changed the question mark typeface and went bolder with the red. I added tints behind the main body text, as well as more space between the headings and paragraph text on the final page.

Version 3: I reduced some of the red on the second page and changed the format on page four reducing the size of the question mark and putting the header across the top.

Pop Art

I used the same development process as for the minimalist version; some sketching and background research. I was particularly struck by Peter Blake’s ‘Dazzle Alphabet’ and looked at how I might create something with that influence.

Using Adobe Draw I sketched out an idea for the cover, I used this method because it is fast and I find this works well when I’m thinking things through. It is also really easy to use fill colour so I can see the composition develop quickly. I had originally thought I would use this as a base drawing, which I would then tidy up in Illustrator/InDesign.

However, I remembered some earlier feedback from my tutor about the final design losing some of the urgency and freedom of my original sketches. I decided to be brave and use this original digital drawing as the cover, this felt risky because its messy but it seemed to work with the Pop Art theme and I wanted to challenge myself to develop it. This proved quite difficult particularly having started with the minimal design, as soon as I used a grid structure in InDesign the layout started to tighten up again and there was a mismatch between the inside pages and the cover.

At this point I was close to dropping the idea and trying something else, but after researching some typefaces I thought I should carry on and keep developing it. I liked the contradictions of something being handwritten but now infinitely repeatable being used; it felt in keeping with the critiques underlying much of Pop Art about consumerism and mass production. I went on to develop three versions:

Version 1: uses bold block colours and lines drawn with the mouse so they are evidently hand drawn.  I decided on typefaces that echoed comics/80s advertising type text – Brush Hand New, From Where You Are and Lato. I also introduced repeating motifs, which was also a feature of Pop Art. I wasn’t sure this version pushed the concept far enough so decided to make changes.

Version 2: I changed the block colours on the inside pages and added a ‘whaam’ type motif with the 2000yrs. I also added black strokes to some of the typography to add to the popular culture type feel. This looked better but I thought the colours were still not quite right.

Version 3: For this version I went red on pages two and three, which I think works better with the splash motif. I also made the archetypal structures in the background a little more prominent.

I think overall the minimalist version is probably the most successful and I have a preference for its clean structure. I made a minor change to the last question mark (back to Infinity typeface), and removed the orphan from the quote on page one. I see this as the final version.

However, I am really glad I experimented with the other version, it is more fun and vibrant and in a style that is definitely out of my comfort zone. With each version I felt I was getting braver and I think this was important in terms of recognising some possible self-limiting assumptions I carry. It is hard to shrug off the notion of what ‘proper’ design looks like and be less constrained and more playful. I think I am starting to get better at experimenting and taking a risk on an approach that might not work out.

I find Albert Exergian’s film posters an inspiring collection, I love their bold simplicity and the way they seem to distil the film to its essence. Reflecting on my response to them I am conscious that they work on the basis of shared cultural references. You need to know the film or show (or at least have heard about it) for the symbols to work effectively. I must admit there are a couple I don’t get because I don’t know the work they refer to. Adding lots of information would probably make little difference as I still wouldn’t know the references.

That said I like the fact that I have to work at these as viewer. It also makes me think about what I might do as a similar exercise. I think it is significant that this was a self-initiated project but that it generally seems to be referred to as an ‘iconic’ set of designs. In researching Exergian I came across two other designers whose work is also minimalist in approach. – Outmane Amahau and Michal Krasnopolski.

Krasnopolski developed his film posters based on using the constraint of a grid system; I am really taken by the creativity that imposing these restrictions has engendered. The target audience is the movie enthusiast so again they work based on the view that the viewer is likely to know the cultural references.

Amahau’s posters take different art movements as their subject matter.

The series was born from my observation… When I imagine an art movement, in my mind I see a minimalist form taken from a famous work. For example, when I think of Surrealism, the first image that comes to my mind is a melting clock. Huffington Post, 2012

Of the three I think Amahau includes more detail, which is perhaps due to the complexity of the subject matter and trying to sum up an entire artistic movement in a single image.  I think I might have pulled back some of his images further – perhaps just the eyes and mouth for ‘The Scream’ for example.

What is engaging my interest in all of this work is how you take the essence of something – an object or a movement – and communicate it. Not dissimilar to the earlier ‘more or less information’ exercise for GD1. I am interested in how imposing constraints and forcing yourself to pare something right back to the essentials requires problem solving skills and inspires creativity.

Assignment One: Introducing Myself

Introducing Myself – the process

Initially, on tackling this assignment I was thinking in terms of a coherent series but as I began developing different ideas I decided to use it as an opportunity to experiment with a range of techniques and approaches. I started with a mindmap and developed the ideas from there. After the minimalist sketches I worked on lots of little thumbnail sketches to develop more ideas.  I have created a set of five postcards that introduce different aspects of my personality, my interests and my life.

 Minimalist Books

As a starting point for the set I knew I wanted to try something very stripped back and quite minimalist. It is not a style I am very familiar with so I thought this would help me start to think in graphic design terms. I did some research online and started a Pinterest board for my postcard inspiration. During the research I found the work of Genis Carreras and that really helped me think about how I might communicate the essence of something important to me (particularly his Values and Philographics series).

Using a mindmap as a starting point I made four small sketches based on a notional ‘work, rest & play theme,’ these then developed into four postcard size ideas, of these it was Work and Books that I preferred. It wasn’t until I had worked on some of the other postcards that I then came back to this set and decided to go with books. I also felt it was something I might be able to try in Illustrator.

Johari Window

The brief made me think a lot about how best to introduce myself. Whether I should represent my work, my home life, my personality traits or preferences and so on. This led me to question how much it is ever possible to share anything that might go beyond the superficial. How can I introduce what I might not even know about myself?

I do a lot of personal development work and use a variety of models and was reminded of the ‘Johari Window’. I decided I wanted to include this as one of the postcards and quickly sketched the two by two matrix.  I did an internet search and found that almost all the diagrams used for the model are four boxes with text in each but I wanted something more visual and very simple.

I did an initial sketch using circles (like ‘minimalist books’ it was in part inspired by the work of Genis Carreras) and decided to go with that approach, I didn’t do any alternative versions as this felt right very quickly. I then decided that the simplicity leant itself to my first tentative steps to learning Illustrator.  I used the full circle for those aspects of me known to myself and to others, half circles for those elements known only to me or only to others and then a black rectangle for those hidden aspects. Where I did try alternative versions was with the colours but given the infinite variety available this felt a bit like falling down the rabbit hole! I’m not sure I got the colours quite right but I was really pleased to get as far as I did in Illustrator!

Smile was prompted by my enthusiasm to do something playful and built on some earlier collage work I had done for a previous module. I could have made it a Photoshop composite but I wanted to keep it as tactile as possible and preserve the cut edges. I simply thought of things that made me smile, collected some images from my archives and royalty free sites and played on the page. I created three collages and chose the bicycle version for the final selection.

I really enjoyed making these and was surprised how quickly they came together. It was a good reminder to play and not be too caught up with ideas of ‘perfection.’ The sunflower was printed just as my printer was playing up but I decided to keep it because I quite liked the effect. I’m not sure whether ‘Smile’ fits a graphic design label but it certainly says something about me!

 

 

Still life

An early idea in the formstorming was based on some of my recent still life work. I have spent some time researching the history of still life and particularly the Vanitas tradition. The Tulip for me has now become loaded with meaning – connoting beauty, wealth, capitalism, economics, life and death. I experimented with framing the the tulip in different ways and decided on the less cropped version. I wanted to show an almost ethereal tulip and to include the text ‘still life’. The words are arranged for the reader to read them in different ways – stillness, life, still life the genre, and still living!

 Universal Declaration of Human Rights

This was the last of the ideas to emerge and came out of a desire to create something different in format. As the others were evolving I was trying to think of something that might have a more sculptural or ‘off the page’ feel to it. This was in part influenced by some recent photographic work on still life where I was trying to break the conventional frame of the image.  As I was continuing with collecting for my Pinterest Board I came across the book cover by Nina Jua Klein.

This was just the inspiration I needed and it got me thinking about what text I would use by way of introducing myself. I went through favourite books, articles and so on but nothing quite landed. A lot was happening around current affairs at the time in terms of Brexit, migration, horrendous atrocities and complex national conflicts and so on. It was also the time of the Olympics and Paralympics. I was reminded of the 2012 Paralympic opening ceremony (I have a connection to one of the two Artistic Directors) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) presented itself. I felt it was a perfect text to use in terms of my concerns for social justice, equality and human rights in general.

The UDHR also felt right because Article 27 enshrines the right to participate in the cultural life of the community and I know how privileged I am to be able to do so.

Article 27.

 (1) Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.

(2) Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author.

I experimented with a range of layouts, and after many hours of cutting up and re-positioning the strips I produced a sculptural version, I then photographed the final result.


All the postcard backs were produced using Publisher, I didn’t feel I was ready to tackle InDesign but that is next on the list. With hindsight it was probably a mistake to do it this way as I then needed to make some convoluted format changes to get them to a suitable state to upload. I should have been brave and done them all in Illustrator, which I think I would do in future.
